Below is a portion of the book. It is the description of a reseller account and a VPS
Types of Web Hosting Accounts
You have many options in this area. I am going to give a brief description of every option you have and you can chose what is best for you. However, remember, this is what all of your customers will be on, so choose very carefully. If you choose a bad host it can land you in a whole deal of trouble, ranging from losing clients to potential lawsuits due to downtime or loss of files
Reseller Account: This is the very basic way to sell hosting. A reseller account is simply an account with the ability to create other hosting accounts. If you are first starting out this is probably your best choice. The reason being is for the pros below. If you choose a good hosting company you will most likely be safe from a lot of the troubles that plague web hosts with any of the other options
Pros:
- Don’t have to worry about anything in regards to the server.
- The cheapest option
- Allows you to sell hosting accounts
- More preinstalled software. Depending what host you go with, they may offer extras such as RVSkin, which is generally not offered on a VPS or Dedicated server for free.
- Don’t have to configure the server, everything will be ready to go
Cons:
- No root access, so you can’t do things you may want to do
- You have to rely on another company, which can be bad if they don’t manage the server well.
• Can’t sell reseller accounts to others
- You will be sharing a server with others so the server performance may be poor
- You won’t have much space and bandwidth
- Lower profit margin than a VPS or dedicated server because the amount you pay per GB of space and GB of bandwidth will be greater.
VPS (Virtual Private Server): A VPS is exactly what it’s named, it’s not actually a private server (a dedicated server), however it acts in many of the same ways. You will have root access and will be able to install a lot of programs that you can’t with a reseller account. You will be able to control every aspect of your server to a degree. If you aren’t ready to make the jump to a dedicated server, this is a very good choice
Pros:
- Get root access
- Acts almost the same as a dedicated server • Can sell other reseller accounts
- Cheaper than a dedicated server • More space and bandwidth than a reseller account
- Higher profit margin than a reseller account because the ratio of what you pay to space/bandwidth will be better.
Cons:
- Have to worry about a lot more. You will have full control, and will have to configure things and worry about things such as server security, and everything being configured correctly
- More expensive than a reseller account
- Still sharing a server with other people, so what they do can effect the server
- Your resources will be limited, and will be much less than a dedicated server
- Lower profit margin than a dedicated server
